Is your blog nominated for a Black Weblog Award?

Black Weblog Awards

Have you sent in your nominations for the 2010 Black Weblog Awards, yet? If not get to it; the deadline to submit blogs for nomination is Sunday, July 25. As they say, you have to be in it to win it. Also, I’m happy to see the BWA website getting updated regularly. In particular, I’m digging the Blogging Stories series and tips from past BWA winners like Fave (2007 Judges’ Choice for Best Podcast).

BWA 2011 Kickstarter Campaign

A recent development: There’s a new BWA Kickstarter campaign for 2011 because, the awards need to expand:

In order to do this, we need help from the online community. In 2011, we want to have a live awards ceremony with trophies, streaming video, and a private, catered reception. This will not only put the Black Weblog Awards on the map physically, but also metaphorically, showing that the recognition of the breadth and depth of knowledge, experience, and cultural significance is truly worth showcasing.

Meanwhile, I’m behind on choosing my picks for this years BWAs (I’ve been asked to participate in judging again this year). If you have any stellar recommendations, leave in the comments.

Flipboard could change my mind about iPad

Screenshot of Flipboard

I’ve been pretty meh about the iPad, so far. I’ve played with it and yes, it’s kinda fun and it has potential to be a great… something. But at $500, “kinda fun” isn’t enough of a motivator for me for to consume information I already consume on an overgrown iPod Touch. I also have issues regarding the size; it’s a little too big for me to carry around day-to-day. Most importantly, I’m a content creator at heart, as well as an active web developer. I want a little more functionality.

That said, the new app Flipboard for iPad is hot:

I played with it a bit on our office device and enjoyed it. If I’m going to use a device primarily to connect with my friends and consume/share information, this would be the way I’d like to do it. Even in the 30 minutes I used it, I found several feeds and Twitter accounts that I’d never known about, but now follow. The fine folks at Flipboard are still kicking the tires. But it looks like they have a winner on their hands.

Hmm… Maybe by the time the 2nd generation of iPad launches, there will be more apps like Flipboard.

On My Radar: Culture Conductor

Culture Conductor

The wonderful Sarah Dopp has launched a new web destination, named Culture Conductor:

This is a project about online communities: how to create them, grow them, and keep them healthy. It’s a collection of interviews, stories, tools, tips, and wisdom from people who out there on the wild, wild internets doing this kind of work. It’s a place to share ideas and practical advice. It’s a place to find help and get work. And it’s a place to hang out with a people-geek like me.

The project comes just in time, for me. I’ve been having numerous sidebar conversations with community managers and content creators about the nature of the beast. Creating consistent, quality content is not an easy feat. Creating a space that fosters great communication between creators and consumers of that content is even trickier. Or, is it. I hope to contribute to Culture Conductor as soon as I can string the proper words together.
