Convalescing & revisiting “Coming To America”

For the past week, I’ve been battling a bad cold. I suppose it sucks to be sick during the holidays. But then I’m not the holiday type. Instead of coming up with reasons to dodge a bunch of parties, I get to stay in bed and watch a lot of tv with a good excuse.

Recently, Coming To America came on one of my hundreds of DirecTV channels and I watched the entire movie, which I haven’t done in a long time.

Boy, that Eddie Murphy sure was funny! I’d forgot about all of the people who starred in the movie. What an ensemble. And the multiple characters he and Arsenio Hall played paved the way for some great multiple-character work in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (and some reprehensible work in Norbit).

Coming to America also some good soundclips; I’m a sucker for soundclips. Here are two of my favorites:

During the find-a-wife montage at the club when Akeem and Semmi meet Peaches.

The Soul Glo commercial, which I’m convinced served as one of BeyoncĂ©’s first vocal training material.
